Our Story

1978

In Montefalco
for more than 40 years

The Azienda Agricola Montioni was born in 1978 thanks to Adeodato Montioni who started here the activity of milling olives, starting the production of the Montioni extra virgin olive oil.

His work will be continued later by his son, Gabriele Montioni, until 1999.

From 2000 to present

Even today the passion continues

Since 2000, Paolo Montioni, Gabriele’s son, completely revolutionized the Azienda Agricola Montioni by purchasing new land and renovating the oil mill with the acquisition of modern machinery for the production of an extra virgin olive oil of an even higher quality.

Then he began to invest in the wine sector with the construction of a new cellar entirely built underground, an elegant tasting area and, finally, ideal land for the plant of the famous Sagrantino di Montefalco.

Consorzio tutela dei vini

Currently, our Azienda Agricola Montioni is one of the most effervescent and dynamic Umbrian companies
that is part of the 59 wineries of the Consorzio di Tutela dei Vini di Montefalco.
With them we share the objective of strengthening the reputation of Montefalco wines,
through the constant improvement of all the wines of this fantastic land.

Our vineyards are located in a small hamlet of Montefalco, called Pietrauta. The type of soil present and the excellent sun exposure make it an optimal area for the cultivation of a great grape quality, perfect for the production of an extremely valuable wine.

We have always cultivated the vineyards with the technique of “cordone speronato”, a precise business choice aimed at a medium-low productivity of the vine to ensure a grape with higher nutritional properties and, as a result, a red wine and a white wine of excellent quality.

The four types of vine are GrechettoMerlotSangiovese and Sagrantino.

The next fundamental step, then, is the harvest.
The care of the grapes, from flowering to harvesting, is expressed more than ever during this delicate moment.

The grapes are harvested according to the optimum ripeness of each variety. The grapes are hand-picked and placed immediately in boxes which must never exceed 30 kilograms.

Once in the cellar, the grapes are cruched in the crucher-destemmer and the must is stored in barrels, where it will naturally ferment. The temperature must be constantly controlled because it should never exceed 25°-27° or the aromas of the wine will be lost.

Once this phase is completed, the wine is transferred into wooden barrels with a capacity of 225 litres, then placed in the cellar. And that’s where we keep the vintages of the precious Sagrantino and Montefalco Rosso, the two flagships of the Azienda Agricola Montioni and of the city of Montefalco.

Montioni - vigneti-1-1

Last but not least is our oil mill, active in the months of October and November for the production of our extra virgin olive oil.

Every year we produce two varieties of oils: Olio EVO monocultivar of 100% Moraiolo olives with a strong, bitter and spicy taste and Olio Extra Vergine di Oliva produced from olives 50% Moraiolo and 50% Frantoio sweet but slightly spicy.

Also in this sector, our oil mill stands out for the eco-sustainable production and the undoubted quality of our oil, perfect to season every type of dish and exceptional to be enjoyed raw.
