The news about the production of Italian olive oil this year is not at all reassuring.
Production in 2021, like last year, unfortunately tends to slow down. The main cause of this event? The weather conditions of the last few months. Olive trees, in fact, with the production cycle that begins in March and ends in October, are plants that suffer the most sudden changes in weather conditions.
In April, despite having spent a harsh winter, the forecasts for olive oil production in Italy were very positive. Unfortunately, the high temperatures and drought of this summer have cast doubt on every hypothesis, as stated by the General Manager of the Consorzio Olivicolo Italiano, Nicola di Noia at ANSA*.
Quantity and quality of 2021 evo oil: what is expected
The figures are clear: the 2020/2021 vintage will have a sharp decline throughout Italy. Will be produced only 270,000 tons of olive oil or 26.2% less than the previous year.
This trend does not only affect our country but all world production: the International Olive Oil Council estimated a decrease of 6.9% compared to last year and therefore a loss of more than 200,000 tons of oil. Positive note for consumption that remains virtually unchanged.
Fortunately, the climate of recent months has not compromised the quality of our olives. Production of extra virgin olive oil of excellent quality is planned. The Italian oil, therefore, will be good but the quantity of bottles produced will be smaller.
The oil production of the Montioni Farm
You will now ask what the situation of the Azienda Agricola Montioni will be and what is planned for its production of extra virgin olive oil? To answer your doubts Paolo Montioni answered some of the questions that our customers asked us.
Q: Given the forecasts, what do you expect from the production of Montioni oil this year? Will your Azienda Agricola also have a decrease in quantity?
A: Unfortunately yes. The weather conditions have also put a strain on our olive trees that have produced 35% less olives than last year. With fewer olives then it is obvious that we will be forced to produce less extra virgin olive oil.
Q: Will it also be a quality oil or do you presume to obtain a lower quality oil?
A: It will be a higher quality oil than last year! The rains of these days will get us a fantastic harvest. The scents of our olives and oil will be above normal.
Q: What innovations do you use to harvest and process olives?
A: We no longer shake the tree trunks but comb them with electric rakes. These instruments have the particularity to vibrate and therefore not to damage the plant. The olives harvested will be cold-pressed in our mill within 24/48 hours of harvesting.
Q: Last year you started your journey to transform your Azienda Agricola into an organic Azienda Agricola. Specifically, what is changing in your olive growing and in your production of extra virgin olive oil?
A: The BIO culture has radically changed our corporate goal. At the beginning it was aimed at achieving the highest quality, now it is combined with the care of the plant, the ecosystem in which it is located and the animals that live there. My wish is to have a biodiversity that creates an almost unique, unrepeatable and unobtainable environment.
Q: Do you expect prices to be adjusted because of this year’s fall in production?
A: Between the decline in production, the increase in quality and our journey towards organic, this year the price of both varieties of our extra virgin olive oil (our blend and our 100% Moraiolo) will suffer a slight rise.
